During the summer of 2010 I created an interactive sound installation composed of recordings of various artists and musicians under hypnotic trance at the Te Tuhi Centre for the Arts in Auckland, New Zealand. The subjects were given suggestions of alternate sensory experience, resulting in color/sound synesthesia. This altered sensory experience disrupts normal perception and moves towards a more desire-oriented kind of perception. Alongside the installation I performed with local jazz and electro-acoustic musicians, acting as a hypnotist-conductor for live improvised music. The musicians reported a range of experiences, some reporting an almost obsessive connection to one note or one sound that they played in a repetative drone.
